LAHORE: Halal meat exports in Pakistan grew by 9.5% in fiscal year 2014, reaching a record high of $230 million and most exporters say that the market has even more room to grow.

Since 2003, Pakistan’s halal meat exports have grown at a compound annualised growth rate (CAGR) of 29.1%, growing from $14 million in 2003 to $230 million in fiscal 2014, according to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. Yet despite the astonishing growth, experts in the field believe that the sector is still underperforming.

BANGKOK - An estimated 5,000 delegates are expected to meet in Bangkok between 28 – 30 December for the first “Thailand Halal Assembly 2014" to be held at the Bangkok Convention Centre, Centara Grand Hotel at CentralWorld.

Organised jointly by the Halal Science Centre of Chulalongkorn University, the Central Islamic Council of Thailand and Halal Standard Institute of Thailand, the event is designed to help upgrade the standards of halal products and services being made in Thailand to cater to the rapidly growing Islamic market, both within Asia and worldwide. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-Ocha will deliver the opening speech.

An annual halal conference taking place in Sharjah next week will tackle the challenge of varying standards around the world, which pose trade barriers to the development of the industry.

The third Halal Middle East Congress, being held at the emirate’s Expo Centre from Monday until Wednesday, aims to create awareness about issues in halal trade and find opportunities for the UAE market to flourish.

Halal food products stand at $2 trillion globally with Muslim countries accounting for $700 billion, according to a communique issued by the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) during its meeting held in Istanbul (Turkey).

ICCI adopted its budget for 2015 during its 20th session recently in Istanbul which was attended by Turkey Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Organizations of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Secretary-General Iyad Amin Madani.

The OIC Halal Middle East Exhibition & Congress is the only exhibition of its kind in the region, by having a congress from its launch edition and leading Halal trade association and authorities. In the 2nd edition a series of specialized workshops focusing on the Halal industry, and also a complementary show ‘Kitchen Equipment Middle East’ was added which further enhanced the show.

The GCC's regional food import bill will rise to over $53 billion by 2020 as its soaring population has resulted in imported products accounting for up to 90 percent of all food supplies, it has been announced.

Food security and the associated costs of importing food into the region will top the agenda at SIAL Middle East, which returns to Abu Dhabi on November 24-26.

The event takes place as recent figures by the Economist Intelligence Unit forecast GCC food import demand to hit $53.1 billion by 2020, up from $25.8 billion just a decade ago.
